International English Language Testing System – IELTS is an English Language Proficiency Test designed for non-native speakers of English. IELTS is jointly administered by British Council and IDP.

IELTS exam is one of the basic requirements to study and migrate to English speaking countries. The test is designed to serve two different purposes – higher education and work immigration hence the test is available in two different formats – IELTS academic and IELTS general.

IELTS exam measures your language proficiency through four different components such as Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. IELTS is a paper-pencil test.

IELTS Listening

This section on the IELTS remains the same for people taking IELTS academic module or IELTS general module. The section include audio clips from a variety of accents such as British, American, Australian, New Zealand and so on. This section has four sub-sections that pose different variety of audio clips followed by a set of questions. These sections include audio clips of a conversation between two people in a social setting, a monologue in daily life setting, a conversation between up to four people in an education setting, and a monologue in an academic setting. All these clips are played only once and the questions those follow these clips will come in different formats - answer multiple choice questions, label a plan, map or graph, fill in a form, finish a table, finish a stream diagram, give short answers. There are 40 questions in IELTS Listening section. The section is timed for 30 minutes and you get an additional 10 minutes to transfer your answers on to your answer booklet.

IELTS Reading

IELTS reading section is about understanding the given passage, drawing the gist, and reading between the lines in others words understanding something that’s not stated in the passage. You may read between 2150 and 2750 words while you answer the reading section. The formats of IELTS academic and IELTS general module are slightly different. Each of these IELTS modules have three sub-sections with 40 questions

IELTS Academic writing module

– extracts are taken from books, journals, magazines and newspapers. These are general extracts that are specifically written for non-specialist audience on academic topics. The questions may accompany a visual data. Hence, the section measures your ability to integrate and to extract a specific data from various types of data.Glossary is given if specialized languages are utilized as a part of the concentrate.

IELTS General writing module

– removes are taken from sees, notices, organization handbooks, official records, books, magazines and daily papers.It includes two to three short texts on our daily life setting, two short texts on work life setting and a longer text on a general setting which is slightly advanced than the other texts.

IELTS Writing

IELTS writing section is all about how well you organize your ideas, how do you present your response and the use of language and vocabulary. There are two writing tasks to be completed under IELTS writing section. The first IELTS writing task requires you to write a minimum of 150 words in 20 minutes and the second task requires you to write 250 words in 40 minutes. The formats of IELTS academic writing task and IELTS general writing module are different. IELTS Academic writing module– task 1 comes with a visual data and you will be asked to either describe the visual data or explain the steps involved in the process. Task 2 is about writing an essay on the argument given. The tone has to be formal for both the tasks. IELTS General writing module – task 1 is to write a letter requesting for some information or explaining about a particular situation. The tone could be personal, formal or semi-formal. The second task on the IELTS academic writing test and the IELTS general writing test are very much similar. Here you will be asked to write an essay on the argument given in a personal style.

IELTS Speaking

IELTS speaking section remains the same for both IELTS general and IELTS academic modules.Here you will be met by an IELTS certified examiner. The speaking section lasts for about 14 minutes. The test progresses to three stages. Introduction and interview stage general questions related to your home, family, work and interests will be asked. Individual long turn, A task card will be given to you, on which the topic followed by what are the points to include while talking about the topic will be mentioned. You will have a minute to prepare for this task, you may outline your talk. Then you need to talk for about two minutes. A couple of questions will be asked related to the same topic by the interlocutor once after you conclude your talk. Two way discussion a set of questions related to the previous topic will be asked where you get a platform to discuss issues and ideas in detail.

IELTS Test Scoring

IELTS Listening and IELTS Reading sections contain 40 items, 1 mark is awarded to each correct response. The score out of 40 is converted to a band score from 0 to 9 in half-point interval. IELTS Writing and IELTS Speaking sections are graded using a detailed band performance descriptors in four categories.

Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy for Writing. Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation for Speaking. A band score from 0 to 9 is awarded for each of this sections based on the respective descriptors.

IELTS Test Dates and IELTS Registration Deadlines

IELTS test can be taken throughout the year on specific dates and the registration deadline will be a week before the test date.

IELTS Test Score Report

Your IELTS test report will be available within 13 days after the test. You can access your IELTS score report online up to 28 days and a copy of test report form (TRF) will be issued.

If you misplace the original test report form, it cannot be replaced. You may request for up to additional five original copies of your test report to be posted to the universities or immigration officers.

Your test report includes IELTS IELTS listening (0-9), IELTS reading (0-9), IELTS  writing (0-9),  IELTS speaking (0-9) and overall IELTS band score (0-9). Your IELTS score is valid for two years.
