GRE TEST SECTIONS

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

This section includes two tasks – one task based on an issue and the other one on an argument. The issue task expects you to evaluate the situation and to present your views with supporting examples whereas the argument task expects you to evaluate and critic the argument solely on logic.

Each task is 30 minutes long. These tasks test your ability to evaluate, to develop, and to sustain your views in coherence.

Quantitative Reasoning

This section measures your reasoning skills on questions that involve numerals. A few questions will be based on real life scenarios and the rest will be based on pure mathematics. Concepts are tested from Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Data Analysis.

You encounter questions based on four formats – quantitative comparison questions, multiple-choice question with only one correct answer, multiple-choice question with one or more correct answer, and numeric entry questions.

An online web simulated calculator is available for these sections only.

Verbal Reasoning

Major part of verbal reasoning revolves around vocabulary through identifying relation between words in a sentence and understanding words in context. The other question formats test your ability to extract relevant information from a passage, and to draw inferences that are implicit. The skills are measured across three question formats – reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence.Reading comprehension questions usually expect you to understand the meaning of words in context, to be able to comprehend the gist of the passage, to draw conclusions based on the set of facts, to evaluate strengths and weaknesses, and to extract assumptions and inferences. Around half of the verbal reasoning questions will be based on reading comprehension.

Text completion tests your ability to effectively read, comprehend, and identify when vital words are dropped that form a meaningful sentence. You see one to three blanks in these questions. One blank comes with five answer choices, two and three blanks come with three answer choices for each blank.

For a question to be scored, you must produce correct responses to all the blanks when you have two or three blanks. Partial credit will not be awarded for partial correct responses.

Sentence Equivalence questions are similar to text completion questions. Unlike text completion, sentence equivalence has only one blank however with two correct answers. Sentence equivalence questions come with one blank with six answer choices that can best fit in the blank to make the sentence a meaningful whole.

GRE TEST SCORING

A raw score is computed based on the number of correct responses produced in 2 sections of quantitative and verbal reasoning excluding the experimental section.

Using a process of Equating, the raw scores are then converted to a scaled score from 130 to 170 with 1-point increment.

Even though, GRE is section-level adaptive, the process of Equating adjusts the score as per the level of difficulty of the second section and produces a scaled score one which is fair and comparable with the other test takers’ scores.

AWA is scored by an e-rater and a trained human rater on a scale from 0 to 6 holistically. The essay score is the average of the two scores. If the two scores do not agree with each other, then the second human rater scores the essay to resolve the discrepancy.

The final essay score will then be the average of the two human scores.
