The test is accepted by more 10,000 colleges with test agencies in more than 130 countries. TOEFL is a language proficiency requirement in most of the universities abroad.
Test takers take either paper based test (PBT) or internet based test (iBT) as per what is available in their region. The test is designed and administered by Educational Testing Services (ETS). TOEFL measures your language proficiency through four sections – Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing.

SECTIONS
TOEFL Reading
In this section, you encounter three to four passages with 12 to 14 questions per passage. To answer these questions you get 60 to 80 minutes. The questions come in three different formats – multiple-choice format with four answer choices and only one correct answer, questions with four answer and only one correct answer where you need to insert a sentence, and “reading to learn” with more than four answer choices and more than one correct answer.
TOEFL Listening
This section includes clip from various range of topics from academics lectures to conversation. You are allowed to jot down points while you answer this section. Questions in this section are presented in four different formats – multiple choice question with four answer choices and only one correct answer, multiple choice questions with more than four answer choices and more than one correct answer, questions on putting events in order or steps involved in a process, and questions that require you to match the text, tables and so on. This section lasts for about 60 to 90 minutes.
TOEFL Speaking
This section includes various topics related to your experiences, education and college life. Two questions are independent tasks and the other questions are integrated tasks that involve reading and writing while speaking or listening and speaking. This section is 20 minutes long and includes an overall of six questions.
TOEFL Writing
In this section, you will be presented with two tasks –integrated writing task and independent writing task. Immediately after the listening section, the first task that you attempt in the writing section is an integrated writing task as it requires you to integrate listening, reading and writing skills followed by an independent task. The duration of this section is 50 minutes.
