GRE How do I prep

  • 02/24/2021

About GRE:

The GRE General Test is a multiple-choice, computer-based, standardized test developed and administered by the Educational Testing Service known as ETS. It assesses academic readiness for graduate school by measuring verbal, mathematical, critical thinking, and analytical writing skills. Some graduate programs require applicants to take not only the GRE General Exam but also a GRE Subject Test that tests technical knowledge related to a particular area, such as physics, psychology, or mathematics. It takes an average of two to four months to prepare for the regular GRE.

Many grad programs such as Master’s, Ph.D., and other professional degree programs ranging from liberal arts subjects to technical fields, allow applicants to submit GRE scores. The GRE Score requirements can vary from school to school, and even from applicant to applicant.

Over the last few years, it has become common for business schools to accept GRE scores in place of the GMAT, the traditional business school entrance exam. There is also a small but growing group of U.S. law schools that accept the GRE as an alternative to the LSAT, the typical law school entrance exam.

The GRE General Test appointments are offered year-round at physical test centres in most parts of the world, but the slots are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. For students in regions without test centres, the at-home version of the test might be a viable alternative.

Study Plan

Studying for the GRE requires a tremendous amount of perseverance as it can get boring and repetitive. It is easy to lose drive and crack out your phone and start watching Netflix. So here are a few basic tips to keep you going:

1. Study for the GRE the right way.

  • 50 hours of studying poorly will not raise your score, but 50 hours of using proven techniques and strategies will.

  • You must study the right questions, at the right time, in the right order, to get the highest point improvement possible. For example, practice vocabulary for at least 20 – 30 minutes and long passage reading for at least 5 minutes from one of the Verbal sections of the ETS book every day.

  • Keep a study tracker and fill out what you did on your GRE study. Fill out an error log for any questions you got wrong or that were time-consuming.

  • Take Full-Length Practice Tests

2. Break up all of GRE prep into small goals and reward yourself for meeting those goals.

  • We have also found that students often need someone to help them schedule their study sessions and to hold them responsible for studying. Therefore, Brighter Prep will check in weekly and prompt you to schedule actual study sessions. We will also send weekly reports to you, so you know you are on track. So, you can focus on learning how to tackle the GRE and getting more points.

3. Practice Properly

  • Study only with recently updated GRE practice questions that reflect the new formats. At Brighter prep, we constantly identify and find the most recent GRE question types and train you on strategies to tackle them.

4. Focus on your weak areas.

  • Most students who prepare for the GRE have a broad approach to studying, which later becomes ineffective. Mastering the GRE requires focus on individual skills. For example: To get better at integer questions, you need to do a lot of questions on integers.

  • Review every single question that you missed and learn what mistakes you made.

5. Customize Your Study Plan

  • Ignore the “one size fits all” phrase. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and has different goals. This means you need to prep in a way that is tailored to you. So, every student needs a unique GRE study plan.

  • This is exactly how Brighterprep works. You will take a diagnostic test that will determine your weaknesses. We will then create a study program specially customized for you. Then, you will have focused lessons dedicated to each skill. This will train you for all the questions formats that will appear on the GRE.

Above all, you need to be determined enough to put in the time and effort to get a good score. The fact is your GRE score adds a lot of value to your grad school application. So, think about why you want to go to a graduate school and imagine the best outcome from getting into your dream grad program. Think about getting the admissions packet in the mail, setting the stage for you to achieve your dream career. It is this dream that a good GRE score can help you achieve.
